Position Summary:

Responsible for the delivery routing and route structure using the Roadnet system to achieve daily route optimization, as well as the ongoing database maintenance and analysis of the Roadnet system.  Create and use a variety of management reports to monitor key delivery metrics.  This position reports to the Routing Manager and/or Director, Delivery Operations Planning.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Must be available to work an eight-hour shift, depending on Market assignment.

 

Routing:

  • On a daily basis, use Roadnet as a tool to produce the most cost-effective and efficient route sequence for each individual driver and for the market overall by sequencing stops in accordance with customer attributes and efficient mileage
  • Daily, create cost-effective and well-balanced routes
  • Evaluate the optimal number of Staples fleet trucks needed daily to achieve Level of Service, productivity and cost goals
  • Produce accurate and attainable standards for each driver specifying drive time and service time
  • Communicate routing changes to drivers and supervisors on an ongoing basis
  • On a regular basis, perform “what if” scenarios and offer routing solutions to reduce cost and improve service
  • Complete additional reports and tasks as assigned

Database Maintenance:

  • Daily, ensure Customer Attribute data changes are warranted and completed within the required SLA
  • Time windows for delivery
  • Proper placement of stops on map
  • Daily, update Map Maintenance data as changes are warranted:
    • Rush hour patterns
    • Traffic trends
    • Road speed
    • Construction
    • Addition of missing roads
  • Update cost data on a continuous basis and ensure cost data is accurate:
    • Driver pay
    • Lease cost
    • Fleet cost (any fixed or variable cost)
    • Use GPS data to make modifications to database, as needed

 

Analysis/Reporting:

  • Daily, generate necessary reports from the DPR or other current productivity tool and submits to management; ensure the accuracy of DPR reports by following standard processes and monitoring data verification by SDO’s 
  • Lead discussions with transportation management on metric variances and continuous improvement plans
  • Meet with Drivers and Supervisors to discuss driver performance and follow-up to ensure performance issues have been corrected
  • As needed based for regular review and Opportunity Route focus, roll up driver and SDO performance to identify driver and route performance trends for tracking and continuous improvement.  
  • As needed, evaluate alternate routing plans (4X10 routes, alternate delivery days, etc) for lower cost solutions

Primary Interactions:

  • Daily interaction with Market management and personnel including Sales, Account Implementation, Delivery and Warehouse; occasional interaction with customers and regional/headquarters staff

Qualifications

Basic:

  • 3-5 years of progressive experience in any combination of transportation, warehouse operations, or related logistics
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software (database, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management applications)
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Proven ability to quickly learn new technical systems and processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with all levels within organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with transportation systems technology and order management systems
  • College degree
  • Minimum two years transportation experience preferred
  • Customer-focused with strong sense of urgency
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Functional knowledge of computer programs including Excel, Access and Brio
  • Must be highly motivated, independent, proactive, flexible and organized
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Ability to work with tight deadlines and balance workload effectively
  • Understanding of operational and financial analysis
  • Experience with RoadNet
