Key Responsibilities
PPG has created a new X-SBU team on polyurea product technology for multiple applications in various business segments including Automotive, Industrial, Architectural, Refinishes and Protective and Marine coatings.
Business objective: Grow PPG polyurea product line business from ~ $20MM (~ 1.5% share) to > $50MM (~ 3% share) over the next 5 years, by extending polyurea offering into existing and emerging market applications across multiple SBU’s.
Technical objective: Leverage and extend PPG’s existing resin synthesis, formulation knowledge and capabilities, application expertise, analytical capabilities, and fundamental material property knowledge to support growth in extended and emerging applications. Position PPG as a company with expertise and leadership relative to polyurea science, materials and applications.
PPG is seeking a self-motivated chemist to plan and conduct projects independently and as part of a team to develop innovative profitable new polyurea coatings products and support existing line of polyurea products.
Primary Responsibilities:
New product development, maintenance of existing products, and other business support activities related to polyurea technology.
Perform a variety of routine and non-routine functions directed toward the formulation of new and existing coatings related to polyurea chemistry. The functions include mixing and spraying of paint and the testing of resulting coatings which require handling hazardous chemicals, careful weighing and mixing of paints, using spray equipments designed for plural components, performing property measurements of wet and dry coatings, gathering data and recording detailed account of results in electronic laboratory notebook.
Maintain a clean and safe laboratory and dispose waste materials.
Work safely with hazardous materials on a daily basis, follow rigorous safety precautions and wear personal protective equipments including use of respirator.
Work closely with supervisor who will provide specific and detailed instructions regarding formulations and procedures.
Prioritize daily tasks to maximize productivity.
Learns and demonstrates use of terminology, operating procedures, and equipment pertaining to individual project.
Uses internal and external expertise as directed.
Utilizes BPI tools under supervision.
Develop teamwork skills.
Seeks out knowledge of new technology.
Successfully completes projects on time and with the resources available.
Develop understanding of fundamental principles related to structure-property relationship and root cause analysis to design effective experiments.
Develop skill-sets to work independently and collaborate with chemists, engineers from various sites.
Consults with field technical service personnel.
Experience and Education
The candidate must have a BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline with 1 year of coatings formulating experience.
Functional and Technical Skills
Demonstrated basic technical writing skills.
Ability to effectively listen, communicate and carry out instructions in a timely manner.
Open minded and responsive to feedback.
