Key Responsibilities
The Raw Material Specialist supports the raw material introduction process for PPG globally. This position has the responsibility of ensuring information contained in PPG’s Global Product Stewardship (GPS) system is current, accurate and updated regularly. The GPS system has direct impact on product stewardship regulatory compliance documents and information. The position requires communicating and acting as a liaison on a global basis with technical, purchasing, product stewardship and suppliers to effectively and efficiently provide compositional and technical information necessary for input to the GPS system.
Within the first 12-18 months, success will be evaluated on the ability to reduce complexity and streamline the process for managing updated information from raw material suppliers. The ability to resolve issues to align and update manufacturer names resulting from mergers and acquisitions will be an important accomplishment and will be measured by a reduction in open issues by at least 50%.
Key Responsibilities
Management of Material Information: Requires coordination and communication of information flows between PPG technical groups and other internal functions to capture data used in the GPS system, managing the database of information in GPS to ensure information is current and accurate, and updating the information in GPS in support of its management of change process.
Communication and Training: Assist to develop, implement and evaluate work processes and training materials for the raw material team to support the raw material introduction process. Respond to questions and issues from the team related to data entry or project assignments. Clear communication and the ability to give and receive feedback related to the process is essential.
Technical Liaison: Act as a communication bridge between internal technical, purchasing and our suppliers to obtain the required technical information for entry to the GPS system.
Supplier management: Coordinate and manage raw material data including physical and chemical information as well as global hazard and regulatory evaluations to and from PPG global suppliers. This process includes ensuring supplier response is controlled for timeliness and quality.
Process development and optimization: Identify and develop efficient and lean processes for the introduction and maintenance of materials into GPS is an important aspect of this position. To the maximum extent possible, processes must be simplified and automated in order to minimize exceptions and manual intervention.
Experience and Education
Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering and up to 3 years of relevant experience
Effective communication skills (both written and oral) with ability to persuade others to gain support for initiatives
Ability to make independent decisions and recommendations leveraging background, experience and technical expertise while working in a team environment
Data management experience with Excel
Excellent planning and organizing skills are critical. Accuracy and attention to detail are also key.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficient with MS Access
Experience with product focused database management systems
Resin synthesis and/or formulations experience or laboratory experience is desirable
Basic Chemistry knowledge
